  • Abstract: It emerges from an examination of the historical and theoretical works of Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444) that his conception of freedom as a configuration of the political community profoundly modifies the Florentine municipal tradition. If in our time, the Chancellor of Florence has be considered as a major witness of the “republican” tradition, his work is also part of a broader history of social categorizations and their dynamic interactions within the body politic.
