Abstract: A. Jainchill proposed the concept of “liberal authoritarianism” to interpret the ideology diffused by Sieyès and Roederer throughout the French Revolution – an ideology that guided, according to the historian, the establishment of the Consulate. This paper explores the authoritarian potentials of Sieyès and Roederer’s speeches during the French Revolution, but it argues that the full development of those authoritarian germs after Brumaire was the result of unforeseen historical circumstances.
