  • Abstract: What does Montaigne mean by “experience”? How does he build his knowledge of himself on experience? There are several kinds of experiences, and one must understand how this science is built on each of them. One thus learns from the collective experience of legal practice by counter-example, and from the internal experience of the soul by the example taken in reverse. For the rules for bodily health, one learns by example drawn from pure experience.
