Abstract: Derrida’s positions with respect to colonialism evolved, from a relatively uncritical attitude towards the French presence in Algeria in the 1960s to an engagement against South African apartheid in the 1980s. This article argues that his critical reading of the clinical work of the psychoanalysts, Abraham and Torok, on grief contributes to explain this path.
