“On the Contemporary Origins of Transhumanism: Julian Huxley and Fereidoun M. Esfandiary”. A close reading of some important early texts of contemporary transhumanism reveals two very different trends within this movement : an awareness of being responsible for a future evolution of humanity, whose traits have not yet been defined; a playful, libertarian aspiration to realize a wide range of possibilities. This article suggests that these two trends remain independent of each other and cannot be reconciled.
Key-words: transhumanism, evolution, naturalism, anthropology, eugenics.

“Outline of a Philosophical Characterization of Transhumanism”. Without denying the inspiring importance of the futurological, speculative imaginary, this essay seeks to avoid all exaggeration and fantasy, short-term prophecy, and technophilic fascination reduced to a catalogue of prospective innovations. Transhumanism has all the potential dimensions of a new philosophy, articulated around a central reflection on technology (technoscience) and evolution. The analysis emphasizes transhumanism’s critical relation to various partially obsolete humanisms.
Key-words: evolution, humanism, person, materialism, post-humanism.

“Tranhumanism in reverse. From Teilhard to Dante”. When analyzing transhumanism, one should underline above all the prefix “trans”, understood following Dante as one of the highest forms of desire. This article shows that with this “trans” Western society opens itself up to various disorders that the Ancients would have regarded as “superstitions”. We shall thus look to Vico in search of a form of balance: all form of progress have to be offset by a proportional archaic sympathy.
Key-words: metamorphosis, transubtantiation, superstition, tradition, splitting

“The Contradictory Imaginaries of Transhumanism”. This article analyzes two regimes of tension which are pervasive in the development of transhumanism as a mode of thought; first in the work of some Anglo-Saxon bioethicists, and second in the discourses of activists gathered in associations or more informal groups. We describe how transhumanists contribute to and are entangled in a sociotechnical imaginary constantly oscillating between emancipation and constraint, fantasy and rationalization.
Key-words: transhumanism, moral enhancement, sociotechnical imaginaries, science-fiction, emerging technologies.

The Discovery of the Umwelt between Biosemiotics and Theoretical Biology (Dordrecht, 2015).
“Human and Transhuman environment: Transhumanism as a Process of Cultural Pseudospeciation”. This paper offers a critical assessment of contemporary transhumanism, drawing on various biological, ethological, and anthropological. It seems that the problems faced by the transhumanist movement –and whose proposed solutions are centred, sometimes naively, on the use of new technologies– constitute genuine problems of adaptation, concrete difficulties that people have to face in the cultural environment of contemporary societies.
Key-words: Transhumanism, speciation, pseudo-speciation, Umwelt, extinction.
Edouard Kleinpeter : « Le corps transhumain : prothèses, hybridité, liberté morphologique ».

Having originally trained as an engineer, he has come to focus on the mediation and dissemination of scientific and technical knowledge. His research falls into two areas : interdisciplinarity and human enhancement. He edited L’Humain augmenté (Paris, 2013).
“The Transhuman Body: Prostheses, Hybridity, Morphological Liberty”. This article analyze various issues concerning the relationship of transhumanist thinking to the body and to its hybridization with technological parts. Drawing on philosophical and psychological approaches, a criticism of transhumanism developed based on Anders Sandberg’s notion of “morphological freedom”. I will then discuss the diverse conditions and forms of the corporal integration of technology, focusing on the example of people suffering from the congenital absence of a limb. Key-words: Prostheses, hybridization, morphological freedom, body schema, agenesis.

“Biopower, bipolitics and transhumanism”. Transhumanists are also concerned by the problem of death. The number of methods and techniques developed by advanced biological research to eliminate this scourge of humankind grows ever longer. Of all the ways to treat the deadly disease that affects us all, politics should not be forgotten. It is even questionable whether an immortal society would need the same sort of politics as ours and what form of policy would be appropriate. Key-words: Biopolitics, immortality, transhumanism, Foucault (Michel), bioethics.
Massimo Reichlin, « Is there a need for moral enhancement? ».
He has published “Bioethics in Italy: two reasons of discontent” in no. 15 of the Journal international de bioéthique (Paris, 2004).
In several contributions, Persson and Savulescu have argued that there is an urgent need for moral enhancement. I suggest that their original argument, based on the connection between cognitive enhancement and moral enhancement, is inconclusive. I further take up a sceptical stance with respect to the more moderate view, defended by Douglas, according to which moral enhancement, though not a moral necessity, is inherently beneficial and worth pursuing. If moral enhancement interferes with the construction of our moral character, and risks endangering the integrity of the moral self, I suggest there may be reasons to doubt that it is morally permissible.
Keywords: Moral enhancement; transhumanism; human dignity; coercion; moralising process.
