Abstract: In attributing to Genesis 2 the first example of the notion of “open history,” as well as the first example of narrative as “symbolic form”, Voegelin clearly showed extraordinary hermeneutic perspicacity. Nevertheless, he overlooks the meaning of Genesis 22, that is to say, the way in which the notion of “promise” makes possible the articulation of formal law and political practice.
