Abstract: Drawing upon the novel The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi, I reflect on the nature of the police investigation. Beyond the horrific nature of the crimes committed, the inves-tigation in this novel stands out for a number of reasons. It demonstrates to what extent the crime, its solving, and then the conviction of the supposed criminal, are part of a political lexicon. The investigation politicizes individual acts, inscribing them within its discourse.
