Écrire en récurrence pour lire en série : le monde noir se laisse explorer comme une forme particulière de « milieu », par la « fictionnalisation à bas bruit » de faits divers, ou d’affaires, appartenant aux realia ; la réécriture, souvent anthologique, de ces événements permet-elle d’angler un « nouveau réalisme » qui se fraierait, comme une isotopie sous une autre isotopie, un chemin vers l’hybridation ? C’est le questionnement qui guidera ce premier volume des « séries policières ».

Writing recurrently for serial reading: the world of crime can be seen as a unique kind of environment, through the “tacit fictionalization” of news stories or incidents that belong to realia. Does the often-anthological rewriting of these events justify us speaking of a “new realism,” fighting its way, like an isotopy within another isotopy, toward hybridization? This is the question that guides this first volume on “crime series.”

Le lien du réalisme et de l’enquête dans le roman policier est patent : enquête et réalité – réalité de mondes cachés, ou de mondes manifestes, ainsi rendus encore plus manifestes – ; enquête et manière d’abstraction du roman policier – l’accomplissement de l’enquête ferait du réalisme un jeu d’apparences – ; enquête, réalisme et ensembles sociaux ou totalité sociale – le 180meurtre est, de fait et de droit, une donnée publique, qui engage un espace public et des ensembles sociaux.

Jean Bessière, “Some notes on the links between realism and the investigation and on the questions that they raise, or: the minimum requirements and defining properties of the crime novel”

In crime novels, there is an obvious link between realism and the investigation being conducted. First, there is a link between the investigation and reality: the reality of hidden worlds, or of visible worlds that are thus made more visible. Then, there is the link between the investigation and the way the crime novel deals with it, whereby the completion of the investigation can turn realism into a game of appearances. There is also a link between the investigation, realism, and specific social groups or the whole of society: murder is, de jure and de facto, public information that involves a public space and social groups.

On étudiera comment le roman pour adolescents et young adults s’est aussitôt emparé des faits divers autrichiens sur les jeunes filles enlevées, séquestrées, affamées, violentées, violées et parfois engrossées, avec ou sans inceste. Le corpus (Palabras envenenadas de Maite Carranza, Room de Emma Donoghue et The Cellar de Natasha Preston, etc.), permet de s’intéresser aux ressources mises en œuvre par les auteures pour raconter, faire éprouver et dénouer les situations.

Christiane Connan-Pintado, “In the shadow of the young girls in the cellar”

This paper explores how teen and young adult novels quickly appropriated the Austrian news stories about the young girls who had been abducted, held hostage, starved, assaulted, raped, and sometimes impregnated, on occasion involving incest. My corpus (which includes Maite Carranza’s Palabras envenenadas, Emma Donoghue’s Room, and Natasha Preston’s The Cellar) enables me to focus on the resources that 181these female authors use to tell the story, as well as to untangle these situations and communicate the experience of them to the reader.

Suzanne Bray, « Comprendre les abysses du mal. Les tueurs en série Fred et Rose West dans la fiction de Phil Rickman »

Comme le précise le compte-rendu de The Lamp of the Wicked dans Publishers Weekly, Phil Rickman, tout en présentant une suite de l’affaire West au sein d’un roman policier, « explore la nature du Mal » et « la psychologie des tueurs en série » ; le roman sert donc de mémorial des victimes et rappelle que toute la vérité n’est pas encore connue.

Suzanne Bray, “Understanding the abysses of evil. The serial killers Fred and Rose West in the fiction of Phil Rickman”

As stated in the review of The Lamp of the Wicked in Publishers Weekly, Phil Rickman, who presents a follow-up to the case of Fred and Rose West in his crime novel, “explores the nature of Evil” and “the psychology of serial killers.” The novel thus serves as a memorial to the victims and reminds readers that we do not yet know the whole truth.

Thierry Jandrok, « L’enquête, entre désirs singuliers et demande politique »

À partir du livre de Douglas Preston et Mario Spezi intitulé Le Monstre de Florence, nous engagerons une réflexion sur la nature d’une enquête policière. Au-delà de la nature horrifique des crimes commis cette enquête est exemplaire à plus d’un titre. En effet, elle montre à quel point le crime, sa résolution, puis la condamnation du criminel présumé appartiennent à un langage politique. L’enquête politise des actes singuliers : elle les inscrit dans son discours.

Thierry Jandrok, “The investigation, between individual desires and political demand”

Drawing upon the novel The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi, I reflect on the nature of the police investigation. Beyond the horrific nature of the crimes committed, the investigation in this novel stands out for a number of reasons. It demonstrates to what extent the crime, its solving, and then the conviction of the supposed criminal, are part of a political lexicon. The investigation politicizes individual acts, inscribing them within its discourse.

Luce Roudier, « “Il faut tuer utile”. Fait divers et parodie sanglante dans Les Contre-Enquêtes du Commissaire Liberty de Raphaël Majan »

Il s’agit ici d’étudier le procédé du polar « inversé » où le commissaire commet lui-même des meurtres pour construire ensuite des enquêtes à partir de ces assassinats. Les différents meurtres jouent avec les codes du fait divers, notamment dans les situations et les victimes choisies.

Luce Roudier, “‘Killing must have a point’. News stories and bloody parody in Raphaël Majan’s Les Contre-Enquêtes du Commissaire Liberty”

This paper studies the “inverted” process of Raphaël Majan’s crime novel, in which the police chief himself commits murders in order to then open investigations on them. The different murder cases play with the codes of news stories, particularly in terms of the situations and victims chosen.

Daniel Compère, « Tout est vrai. Les enquêtes d’Ann Rule »

Ann Rule n’est pas une détective de fiction, mais une romancière. Bénévole dans une œuvre sociale, elle fait la connaissance de Ted Bundy qui va s’avérer être un tueur en série. Lorsqu’il est démasqué en 1978, elle décide de lui consacrer un livre qu’elle publie en 1980 : The Stranger Beside Me (Un Tueur 183si proche). On s’interrogera donc sur ce genre hybride qu’elle nous propose, à mi-chemin entre le reportage et le roman.

Ann Rule was not a fictional detective, but a novelist. While volunteering in social work, she met Ted Bundy, who would later turn out to be a serial killer. When he was found out in 1978, she decided to write a novel about him, entitled The Stranger Beside Me, which she published in 1980. This paper will examine the hybrid genre that she uses, midway between a news report and a novel.

L’article de presse s’intègre et s’apparente, sous la Troisième République, à une économie de marché. Les échanges réguliers de sujets d’actualité entre chroniqueurs impliquent un travail d’écriture sur le vif voire de réécriture de l’événement une fois le papier entre les mains du chef de l’information ; seul le sujet se trouve ici remis ou troqué. Avant sa publication, l’article nécessite une réorchestration de ses auteurs qui s’apparente souvent à une dramatisation.

Cédric Hannedouche, “Headlines as a crime-mill in the ‘Belle Époque’, a serial principle”

In the Third Republic, newspaper articles became part of and grew to resemble a market economy. The regular trading of news stories between reporters involved on-the-spot writing or even rewriting of events once the paper reached the hands of the news editor. At that point, the story alone was either handed over or traded. Before publication, the article had to be reworked by its writers, a process that often resembled dramatization.

Désiré Nyéla, « La vie à bout portant. Du polar à la sauce noire »

Cet article entend examiner l’œuvre d’une des figures majeures du polar africain, l’écrivain gabonais Janis Otsiemi, dont l’inspiration rend compte d’un phénomène inédit en Afrique, à savoir son urbanisation galopante et anarchique, avec tous les effets désastreux des déterritorialisations que cela peut comporter. L’imaginaire d’Otsiemi recode ces déterritorialisations à travers l’expression d’une criminalité allumée par un instinct de survie.

Désiré Nyéla, “Life at close range. Crime fiction with an African flavor”

This article examines the work of one of the leading figures of African crime fiction, the Gabonese writer Janis Otsiemi. Otsiemi draws inspiration from an unprecedented phenomenon in Africa: its rapid and chaotic urbanization, and all the disastrous effects of deterritorialization that this can entail. Otsiemi’s imaginary gives this deterritorialization new meaning by depicting crime as being sparked by a survival instinct.

Guillaume Gomot, « Un cadavre dans le placard… Delphine de Vigan à l’épreuve du réel ? »

On se propose d’étudier de quelle manière le récit policier et le fait divers constituent des lignes de fuite majeures dans deux romans récents de Delphine de Vigan, Rien ne s’oppose à la nuit (2011) et D’après une histoire vraie (2015). Ces récits à la première personne peuvent être lus, en effet, comme les jalons d’une série narrative (où le second roman constituerait la suite du premier) fondée sur la figure cardinale de l’enquête.

Guillaume Gomot, “A skeleton in the closet… Delphine de Vigan put to the test of the real?”

In this article, I examine how crime fiction and news stories are important convergence lines in two recent novels by Delphine de Vigan, Rien ne s’oppose à la nuit (2011) and D’après une histoire vraie (2015). These first-person accounts can in fact be 185read as the building blocks of a narrative series (in which the second novel is the sequel of the first) based on the key figure of the investigation.
