Abstract: Venice and Genoa’s overseas commercial endeavors were closely dependent on their respective metropolitan center. The center appointed its representatives, on whom it imposed a commissio defining their rights and duties. Nevertheless, local authorities had the right to establish an embassy in the capital. The attempted uprisings in Crete and Chios were defeated, so one can hardly speak of the autonomy of the Italian colonies in the Levant.
