Abstract: The history of the published versions of the Essais, from 1595 to the present, is the story of a publishing accident. The meaning behind this astonishing event, which ties in with questions of literary property, the notion of authorship, and the reception of Montaigne’s work, is analyzed in the studies gathered in this volume.
