Abstract: This article explores the situations which led the earliest artisans in the world of kinematography to employ the different kinds of joining underlying what would eventually be called “editing.” He also examines the way the editing operation gradually became more technical as it complexified throughout the “silent” film period, during which it took on increasing importance.
