Abstract: The lexicon of varieties of popular French provides the best perspective from which to assess the French which the Creoles of the Antilles developed from. The analysis of some fifty lexical types allows us to identify it as one of the popular forms of French used by those migrating from the rural world towards the cities and overseas, marked by incomplete acculturation, a temporal gap manifested by archaisms, innovations and regionalisms from multiple origins.
