Abstract: This contribution takes a theoretical perspective according to which French-based Creoles reflect evolving features of vernacular varieties of the French exported to the colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: “colonial French”. Privileging data related to a comparison between certain linguistic traits of the French of Louisiana and Haitian Creole, it seeks to reconstitute certain aspects of colonial French while taking the differences of linguistic contact into account.
