Abstract: Based on data provided by the Dictionnaire étymologique des créoles français d’Amérique, currently in preparation at the Universities of Bamberg and Ratisbonne, this outline of the vocabulary of magic and sorcery studies the legacy of traditional magical terminology on the one hand, and the semantic changes which have arisen in Creole terminology on the other. It reveals the traces left by the depreciating discourse on magic.
