Abstract: Do the major theories of translation have to be mastered before beginning any translation practice or do they gradually reveal themselves in the act of translation itself? Furthermore, does one theory apply as a selected colour rather than another? These are the questions we will try to answer in the following article, which will focus on the translation into French of the incipit of Louise Erdrich’s The Night Watchman.
