Abstract: A member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, Louise Erdrich has become one of the most successful writers of the Native American Renaissance. In 2021, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Night Watchman. When did Native American literature originate? What political circumstances favored the birth of such specific literature at the end of the 1960’s? And how can Erdrich’s works, and The Night Watchman in particular, be perceived as typical of indigenous literature?
