Abstract: The difficulties in translating rude Romanian words belong to several fields, among which culture seems to be the most important. When the Romanians use blasphemy or swear words, the French use a humiliating insult. The translators’ dilemma, when faced by some strongly idiomatic Romanian offensive words, is either to be faithful to the letter and to make use of the “source” methods, or to use the “target” methods, in order to be closer to the intention of the source text.
