Dear Sir
I return to you by registered mail the collection of documents which you have sent me.
This is an ignominy ! One wrings one’s hands in sorrow and disgust. But there are almost identical things going on in the prisons of Poland ; you have them in the prisons of California, when they are martyrizing the workingmen of the I. W. W. ; you have them in Jougoslavia ; you have them in the English dungeons of the Andaman Islands, into which have been cast the Indian patriots. Each week similar cries of sorrow and accusation come to me from some country of the world.
I will not write the introduction which you ask me. It would become a weapon against one party in the hands of other parties who are neither better nor worse*.
I do not indict a system, but Man. No one knows whether ferocity or stupidity predominates in him. And perhaps the latter is most formidable. You can defend yourself against ferocity ; you can even flatter yourself, at times, that you may overcome it. But against stupidity you are defenseless.

*In the letter to M. Rolland, accompanying the documents, M. Rolland was asked for « a few lines expressing yours sentiments for publication as a prefactory note to the book », without suggesting to M. Rolland in any way the character of the reply.

Je vous renvoie par courrier recommandé l’ensemble des documents que vous m’avez envoyés.
Quelle ignominie ! À les lire on se tord les mains de chagrin et de dégoût. Mais l’on trouve des faits presque identiques dans les prisons polonaises, dans celles de Californie où l’on martyrise les travailleurs de I.W.W3 ; en Yougoslavie, dans les cachots anglais des îles Andaman4, où sont jetés les patriotes indiens. Chaque semaine m’arrivent de quelque coin du monde de pareils cris de chagrin et d’accusation.
Je n’écrirai pas l’introduction que vous me demandez. Ce serait une arme pointée contre un parti aux mains d’autres partis qui ne sont ni meilleurs ni pires.
Je n’accuse pas un système, mais l’Homme. On ne sait si c’est la férocité ou la stupidité qui domine en lui. Et c’est peut-être cette dernière qui est la plus redoutable. Contre la férocité on peut se défendre. On peut même parfois se flatter de pouvoir en triompher. Mais contre la stupidité on est sans défense.
