Abstract: A major political figure in contemporary French history, Charles de Gaulle was rarely portrayed on screen prior to the 1990s. An increasing number of audiovisual works focusing directly on the general and his political activity appeared in the 2000s, with a biopic released in 2020. De Gaulle is thus both absent and present on the screen. In the first case, the focus is on the political themes of Gaullism. In the second, the general’s life and acts take center stage.
