  • Abstract: Caricature reached its peak thanks to the parliamentary republics, which increased the freedom of the press, combining a proliferation of cheap newspapers and skillful artists who targeted the orators of the parliamentary scene. Although parliament relates to a collective power, the artists’ talent and influence brought to the fore leaders whose characteristics were magnified by these portraits. Paradoxically, the personalization of the executive brought about the decline in the influence of press drawing.
