Sandra Folie et Gianna Zocco, « Introduction. Esquisses de l’Europe noire : imaginer l’Europe et les Européens dans les récits d’Afrique et des diasporas africaines »

Sandra Folie est postdoctorante dans le projet Starting Grant du CER « Black Narratives of Transcultural Appropriation. Constructing Afropean Worlds, Questioning European Foundations » au Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung (ZfL) à Berlin. Auparavant, elle était enseignante-chercheuse en littérature allemande à l’université d’Iéna (Allemagne) et en littérature comparée à l’université de Vienne (Autriche), ainsi que boursière doctorale de l’Académie autrichienne des sciences. Dans son premier livre, Beyond ‘Ethnic Chick Lit’ (2022), elle examine la marginalisation et l’homogénéisation de la littérature contemporaine des femmes par des pratiques d’étiquetage sexué et ethnicisé. Elle est coéditrice de New Perspectives on Imagology (2022) et en train d’écrire son deuxième livre sur des méta-images européennes, le blackfacing littéraire et la critique de la blanchité dans la littérature allemande.

Gianna Zocco est chercheuse au Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung (ZfL) à Berlin (Allemagne). Auparavant, elle a été boursière MSCA au ZfL, boursière Max Kade à l’université de Columbia (USA) et chercheuse au département de littérature comparée de l’université de Vienne (Autriche). Elle a achevé son projet sur les images de l’Allemagne dans la littérature afro-américaine en 2022 et publié une monographie sur les fenêtres dans la littérature et un volume coédité sur l’imagologie. À partir de décembre 2023, Zocco sera la chercheuse principale du projet Starting Grant du CER « Black Narratives of Transcultural Appropriation. Constructing Afropean Worlds, Questioning European Foundations ».

L’introduction porte sur des imaginations littéraires noirs de l’Europe qui inversent où compliquent le regard européen (néo)colonialiste sur « l’Autre africain ». Elle examine l’état de la recherche et donne un aperçu des objectifs et des sources de ce numéro spécial, dont les contributions tiennent compte des spécificités nationales et des contextes transnationaux. Folie et Zocco soulignent le rôle important de la littérature comparée pour les études afro-européennes (et vice versa).

Sandra Folie and Gianna Zocco, “Introduction. Sketches of Black Europe: Imagining Europe/ans in African and African Diasporic Narratives”

Sandra Folie is a postdoc in the ERC Starting Grant project “Black Narratives of Transcultural Appropriation. Constructing Afropean Worlds, Questioning European Foundations” at the Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung (ZfL), Berlin. Previously, she was a researcher and lecturer at the Department of German Literature at the University of Jena (Germany) and at the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Vienna (Austria), as well as a doctoral fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In her first book, Beyond ‘Ethnic Chick Lit’ (2022), she examines the marginalisation and homogenisation of contemporary popular fiction by women through gendered and ethnicised labelling practices. Folie is the co-editor of New Perspectives on Imagology (2022), and is currently working on her second book on European meta-images, literary blackfacing, and critical whiteness in German literature.

Gianna Zocco is a researcher at the Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung (ZfL), Berlin (Germany). Previously, she held a MSCA fellowship at the ZfL, was a Max Kade fellow at Columbia University (USA), and a researcher at the University of Vienna’s Department of Comparative Literature (Austria). In 2022, she completed her project on images of Germany in African American literature. She has published numerous articles on this issue, as well as a monograph on windows in literature, and a co-edited volume on imagology. As of December 2023, Zocco is the PI of the ERC Starting Grant project “Black Narratives of Transcultural Appropriation. Constructing Afropean Worlds, Questioning European Foundations”.

The introduction informs about Black literary imaginations of Europe that reverse or complicate the (neo-)colonialist European gaze at the “African Other”. It reviews the state of research and provides an overview of the aims and sources of the special issue, whose individual contributions take into account both national specificities and transnational contexts. Folie and Zocco emphasise the important role of comparative literature for the field of African European studies (and vice versa).

Mahamadou Famanta, « Au-delà du mot. Principes esthétiques de l’afropolitanisme dans Adas Raum de Sharon Dodua Otoo »

Mahamadou Famanta est doctorant en Études Germaniques à la Friedrich Schlegel Graduiertenschule (Freie Universität Berlin). Il a précédemment obtenu un Master en Études Germaniques avec une spécialisation en littérature et en linguistique à 253l’Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo (Burkina Faso). Son projet de recherche actuel porte sur les reconfigurations postcoloniales et les esthétiques afropolitaines et afropéennes de communalité dans la littérature germanophone contemporaine.

L’article étudie l’afropolitanisme comme esthétique de l’entrelacement et de l’en-commun (Mbembe) dans le roman Adas Raum (2021) de Sharon Dodua Otoo. Il accentue les multiples singularités par différents temps et lieux dans l’œuvre et montre que sa poétique complexe est inspirée de la philosophie akan de Sankofa. En soulignant la diffusion et l’interconnexion des éléments culturels, l’article vise à explorer les esthétiques de l’afropolitanisme outre son emploi comme label et marqueur d’identité.

Mahamadou Famanta, “Beyond the Word. Aesthetic Principles of Afropolitanism in Sharon Dodua Otoo’s Adas Raum”

Mahamadou Famanta is a PhD candidate in German Studies at the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School for Literary Studies, Freie Universität Berlin. Previously, he completed his Master’s degree in German Studies with a focus on literature and linguistics at the Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo (Burkina Faso). His current research project deals with postcolonial reconfigurations and the Afropolitan and Afropean aesthetics of commonality in contemporary German literature.

This article examines Afropolitanism as an aesthetics of entanglement and commonality (Mbembe) in Sharon Dodua Otoo’s novel Adas Raum (2021). It highlights the novel’s portrayal of multiple singularities across different times and spaces, arguing that its complex poetics draws from Sankofa’s Akan philosophy. By emphasising the circulation and interconnection of cultural elements, the article aims to explore the aesthetic principles of Afropolitanism beyond its use as a label and identity marker.

Margriet van der Waal, « Une lettre à Jan van Riebeeck. Reconsidérer les connexions transnationales dans la poésie contemporaine en afrikaans vernaculaire »

Margriet van der Waal est chercheuse en études culturelles et titulaire de la chaire de littérature, culture et histoire d’Afrique du Sud à l’université d’Amsterdam (Pays-Bas) soutenue par la Zuid-Afrikahuis Netherlands Foundation. En outre, elle 254est professeure associée à l’université de Groningen (Pays-Bas), où elle enseigne dans le cadre du programme Erasmus Mundus Euroculture en études européennes. Elle explore des processus de revendications postcoloniales et la diffusion des imaginaires sociaux dans les sphères publiques en Afrique du Sud et en Europe. Récemment, elle a coédité un numéro spécial du Journal of European Studies sur la « fabrication » de l’Europe à travers son patrimoine culturel.

L’article étudie des poèmes en afrikaans vernaculaire qui traitent de l’expérience (post)coloniale. Les œuvres de Ronelda Kamfer et Nathan Trantraal exposent des dimensions encodées des relations entre les Pays-Bas et l’Afrique du Sud, reconnues comme stamverwantschap (parenté tribale). Ils examinent l’impact du colonialisme sur les relations sociales et l’expérience vécue. Ils donnent ainsi une voix aux sujets minorisés et repensent les imbrications transnationales entre l’Europe et l’Afrique.

Margriet van der Waal, “A Letter to Jan van Riebeeck. Rethinking Transnational Connections in Contemporary Vernacular Afrikaans Poetry”

Margriet van der Waal is a cultural studies scholar. She holds the endowed chair of South African literature, culture, and history at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands) on behalf of the Zuid-Afrikahuis Netherlands Foundation. She is also associate professor at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), where she teaches in the European Studies Erasmus Mundus’ programme Euroculture. Her research focuses on postcolonial claim-making processes and the circulation of social imaginaries in South African and European cultural public spheres. Recently, she co-edited a special issue of the Journal of European Studies on the “making” of Europe through cultural heritage.

This article examines selected poems in vernacular Afrikaans about the colonial experience and its afterlife. Ronelda Kamfer and Nathan Trantraal’s works expose obscured dimensions of a conventional encoding of Dutch-South African relations, understood as stamverwantschap (tribal kinship). They also consider the impact of this historical period on social relations and lived experience, thus giving voice to minoritised subjects and rethinking transnational entanglements between Europe and Africa.

Sandra Folie, « Le continent blanc de la nuit. Ré-imaginer l’Europe dans les récits féminins de l’esclavage néocolonial : On Black Sisters’ Street et Joy »

L’article compare le roman On Black Sisters’ Street de Chika Unigwe et le film Joy de Sudabeh Mortezai, qui traitent du trafic sexuel des femmes nigérianes vers la Belgique et l’Autriche. Ils partagent une généalogie de genre avec le récit d’esclavage, mais se focalisent sur le (néo-)colonialisme européen. S’appuyant sur la théorie postcoloniale et intersectionnelle ainsi que sur l’imagologie, l’article analyse la ré-imagination féminine noire et l’exotisation stratégique de l’Europe dans les deux œuvres.

Sandra Folie, “The White Continent of Night. Re-Imagining Europe in Women’s Neocolonial Enslavement Narratives: On Black Sisters’ Street and Joy”

This article compares Chika Unigwe’s novel On Black Sisters’ Street and Sudabeh Mortezai’s film Joy, both about Nigerian women trafficked for sex work to Belgium and Austria respectively. They share a genre genealogy with slave narratives but are primarily concerned with European (neo-)colonialism. Drawing on postcolonial and intersectional theory as well as imagology, this article analyses the Black female re-imagination and strategic exoticisation of Europe in the two narratives.

Gianna Zocco, « Provincialiser l’Europe “par l’intérieur”. Les ouvrages de James Baldwin et Vincent O. Carter sur la Suisse »

L’article étudie deux œuvres afro-américaines, “Stranger in the Village” de Baldwin et The Bern Book de Carter, qui provincialisent l’Europe par une vision interne de la Suisse rurale des années 1950. Il examine comment ces textes inversent le regard ethnographique sur « l’autre » et imaginent l’Europe comme étant historiquement arriérée. Bien que les auteurs aient des intentions différentes, les deux actes de provincialisation ne contestent pas la supériorité de la haute culture européenne.

Gianna Zocco, “Provincialising Europe ‘from the Inside’. James Baldwin’s and Vincent O. Carter’s Writings about Switzerland”

This article studies two African American examples of provincialising Europe ‘from the inside’, James Baldwin’s essay “Stranger in the Village” and Vincent O. Carter’s The Bern Book, both set in 1950’s Switzerland. It investigates how these texts reverse the ethnographic gaze at the ‘other’ and use the rural Swiss scenario to imagine Europe as historically backward. While the authors differ in their intentions, both acts of provincialisation leave the superiority of European high culture intact.

Dobrota Pucherová est chercheuse principale à l’Institut de littérature mondiale de l’Académie slovaque des sciences ainsi que conférencière au département de littérature comparée et au département d’études africaines de l’université de Vienne (Autriche). L’article explore l’auto- et l’hétéro-perception des personnes d’origine africaine en Tchéquie avant et après la chute du communisme, en se basant sur une lecture attentive des autobiographies romancées de Tomáš Zmeškal et d’Obonete S. Ubam. Il tente de localiser la source du racisme antinoir dans un pays qui n’a ni eu de colonies en Afrique ni participé à la traite atlantique d’esclaves, et d’analyser comment cet imaginaire a reflété l’auto-perception nationale des Tchèques.

Dobrota Pucherová is Senior Researcher at the Institute of World Literature, Slovak Academy of Sciences, and Lecturer at the Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of African Studies at the University of Vienna (Austria). This article explores the auto- and hetero-perception of people of African descent in the Czech Republic before and after the fall of communism based on a close reading of autobiographically inspired works by Tomáš Zmeškal and Obonete S. Ubam. Its aim is to locate the source of anti-Black racism in a society that never had colonies in Africa or participated in the transatlantic slave trade, and to analyse how this imagination has reflected Czech self-perception as a nation.

Cette contribution réunit huit entretiens avec des chercheurs internationaux de générations et disciplines variées qui étudient la littérature noire d’Europe : Elisabeth Bekers, Jeannot Moukouri Ekobe, Polo B. Moji, Deborah Nyangulu, Jeannette Oholi, Anne Potjans, Nadjib Sadikou et Dominic Thomas. Le but est de rendre visible les études sur l’Europe noire en littérature comparée, et de contribuer à un discours sur les perspectives de recherche, les théories ainsi que les défis et besoins futurs.

This contribution gathers eight interviews with international scholars of different generations and disciplines who study Black European literatures: Elisabeth Bekers, Jeannot Moukouri Ekobe, Polo B. Moji, Deborah Nyangulu, Jeannette Oholi, Anne Potjans, Nadjib Sadikou, and Dominic Thomas. The aim is to make literary research on Black Europe more visible to scholars in comparative literature and to contribute to a discussion on research perspectives, theories, and future challenges and needs.
