Abstract: In Ciaran Carson’s translation experiment From Elsewhere (2014), translations of Jean Follain are set beside second free translations of the first version throughout. The ensuing contrasts are held in tension: between close and free translation; translation and self-translation; the two historical perspectives of recorder and witness. In this open-ended translation process, extended personal memoir writing can confront the violent events of the Troubles in Northern Ireland many years later.
