Abstract: La Roche’s travel diaries can be regarded as a means for negotiating identity through cultural exchange understood as cultural transfer: they convey early feminist ideas and, by transmitting knowledge about different countries to female readers, also question national identity. La Roche compares various nations to develop her views profitably, as a means to reconsider one’s own culture, thus questioning female and national identity.
