  • Abstract: In After Babel in particular, George Steiner conceives during the crisis of comparative literature a hermeneutical task for culture. He examines three aspects of understanding: its interaction with historical meanings and languages’ evolution, its movement in hermeneutic motion, and its current task. The interpretive hypothesis of the “accomplished reader” show that he too seeks continuity between biblical exegesis and modern hermeneutics.
