Abstract: The first journal of comparative literature, Acta comparationis litterarum universarum (1876-1888), celebrated the reception of works entering the Weltliteratur, but also developed knowledge of unknown literary traditions through translation and gender study. Its publisher sided with struggling linguistic minorities against dominant national cultures. This heritage can guide the competing priorities of contemporary comparative research.
