Abstract: Certain epic characters are feted as both heroes of chansons de geste and saints in Latin lives. Hagiographers established strategies of distorting epic material in order to promote their abbey and fight against the two-fold competition of jongleurs and rival abbeys. The Vita Gerardi Comitis, with its miracle of the punished jongleur, is an exemplary case of rivalry between the clergy and jongleurs over the body of the hero and the epic corpus.
