Abstract: Connecting epic literature and scholarly discourse may seem paradoxical with the earliest chansons de geste, but becomes a necessity for later texts like the Croniques et Conquestes de Charlemaine. The author addresses a cultured public likely to share with him knowledge external to the text, recorded in chronicles or conveyed by earlier chansons de geste. David Aubert’s approach is scholarly, but he aims to entertain as much as instruct.
