Abstract: In search for the roots of the Proustian portrait of love and jealousy, this paper returns to the Middle Ages and to courtly love. While the “roman d’Albertine” moves beyond this model, the young protagonist’s passion for Gilberte and Mme de Guermantes still plays on its conventions.
