Abstract:La Mariane, La Mort de Sénèque, and Osman represent, via the denunciation of tyrannical acts, complex political situations that reflect the tensions specific to the transformation of the monarchy in the seventeenth century. All the characters, from the most virtuous to the most vicious, are deeply ambivalent. Their dark and violent aspect conveys the traumatic specter of the memory of the religious civil wars.
