Abstract: The seventeenth century is marked by the renewal of thinking about war. This thought is like an intellectual challenge to one of the most flagrant manifestations of human violence. Yet the framework for avoiding chaos was not sufficient. Attempts at establishing moral order must accompany legal efforts in the endeavor to eliminate those remnants of brutality that the law cannot completely eradicate.
