Abstract: What does writing mean for Germaine de Staël ? How does she consider herself as an author ? Do we know the real borders of her works ? Such questions seem obvious two hundred years after Staël’s death and after the publication of her first complete works. Though this knowledge could in fact be an illusion : Staël’s effective writing, the way she considerers the function of the writer and her own perception of the author, influenced by social institutions, make Staël as aan author an enigma.
