Qu’est-ce que l’auctorialité et pourquoi revêt-elle une dimension particulièrement intéressante au sein du Groupe de Coppet ? Depuis les travaux de Michel Foucault, nombreuses sont les études qui interrogent la fonction auteur et rendent à l’acte d’écrire son archéologie problématique. L’enjeu du présent numéro consiste à analyser toutes ces formes de l’auctorialité dans les œuvres de Germaine de Staël, Benjamin Constant ou August Wilhelm Schlegel.

What is authorship and why is it such an interesting topic in the Group of Coppet? Since Michel Foucault ’ s major works, researches concerning the author function and what writing means got more and more numerous. Authorship then became a very problematic question and a key concept to enlighten the complexity of the act of writing. The present number will analyse diferent forms of authorship in Germaine de Staëm, Benjamin Constant or August Wilhelm ’ s Schlegel ’ s works.

François Rosset, « Singulier et pluriel. L’écriture collective à Coppet »

Conçu comme une invitation à approfondir un sujet très vaste et complexe, l’article propose d’abord quelques aperçus sur les réalités de l’écriture collective à Coppet telle qu’elle a été documentée par des contemporains ou déduite ex post par l’étude et la lecture des textes. Il y est question d’œuvres dont l’écriture aura été effectivement partagée comme de grands thèmes traités simultanément et avec de nombreuses concordances par différents membres du groupe réuni autour de G. de Staël. Dans un deuxième temps, on examine non sans avancer quelques interrogations critiques la fabrication 186d’une collectivité d’auteurs à travers les opérations éditoriales autant que par le travail d’interprétation et de diffusion assumé par plusieurs générations de lectrices et de lecteurs.

François Rosset, “Singular and plural. Collective writing in the Coppet Group”

Conceived as an invitation to delve deeper into a very vast and complex subject, the article first offers some insights into the realities of collective writing at Coppet as documented by contemporaries or deduced ex post by studying and reading the texts. It deals with works whose writing was effectively shared, as well as with major themes dealt with simultaneously and with numerous concordances by different members of the group gathered around G. de Staël. In a second phase, we examine, with some critical questions, the creation of a group of authors through editorial operations as well as through the work of interpretation and dissemination undertaken by several generations of readers.

On connaît les dynasties de peintres. La famille Necker-Staël-Broglie offre un exemplaire de continuité similaire où le savoir-faire artisanal fait place à une continuité de valeurs. Elle pratique l’écriture publique ou privée, elle se soucie de la défense et de la publication des proches comme un acte social et un engagement historique. La finance, la politique, la philosophie mettent en jeu l’imagination aussi bien que la fiction romanesque et dramatique.

Family authority. The dynasties of painters are well known. The Necker-Staël-Broglie family offers a similar example of continuity in which artistic know-how gives way to a continuity of values. Its members pursue public or private writing, the publication of their friends and relations matters to them as both a social act and historical engagement. The imagination is as much at stake in finance, politics and philosophy as it is in novels and plays.

Qu’est-ce qu’écrire pour Germaine de Staël ? Comment conçoit-elle sa fonction d’auteure ? Connaît-on les contours précis de son œuvre ? Ces questions semblent évidentes deux cents ans après sa disparition et la publication de ses premières œuvres complètes. Or ce savoir pourrait bien constituer un leurre tant la fabrique de la postérité staëlienne, ses pratiques de l’écriture et sa conception de l’écrivain, influencé par les institutions sociales, problématisent l’auteure Staël.

What does writing mean for Germaine de Staël? How does she consider herself as an author? Do we know the real borders of her works? Such questions seem obvious two hundred years after Staël ’ s death and after the publication of her first complete works. Though this knowledge could in fact be an illusion: Staël ’ s effective writing, the way she considerers the function of the writer and her own perception of the author, influenced by social institutions, make Staël as aan author an enigma.

Blandine Poirier, « “Qu’on aime à contempler les larmes d’un grand Homme !” Jacques Necker, écrivain sensible »

Jacques Necker est principalement connu pour avoir été le ministre de Louis xvi, mais cet homme politique est aussi un homme de lettres, et, plus précisément, un écrivain sensible. Dans ses textes écrits entre 1769 et 1787, sa mise en scène de lui-même en homme sensible doit donc être interprétée au-delà de la seule accusation d’égotisme : cette posture est en réalité ce qui le pousse à écrire, notamment pour proposer une nouvelle manière d’exercer le pouvoir, avec sensibilité mais sans naïveté.

Blandine Poirier, “‘Qu’on aime à contempler les larmes d’un grand Homme!’Jacques Necker, a sensitive author”

Jacques Necker is mostly known as Louis  xvi ’ s minister, but this politician is also a litereray man, and, more precisly, a sentient writer. On his texts written between 1769 and 1787, this stagyinf of his self must be construed beyond the imputation of 188 selfishness: this stance is the driving force of his writing, in order to propose a new manner of exercising the power, with sensitivity, without naivety.

Le présent article s’intéresse à Benjamin Constant et à une publication posthume, Du Polythéisme romain considéré dans ses rapports avec la philosophie grecque et la religion chrétienne. Cet ouvrage constitueun exemple fascinant de la manière dont un texte peut être investi de multiples projections auctoriales liées à la mort de l’écrivain.

Theoretical researches maintain a cautious reserve concerning the auctorial status of posthumous publications. However, the question can be addressed today in a new way. The present article focuses on Benjamin Constant, and on a posthumous publication, Du Polythéisme romain considéré dans ses rapports avec la philosophie grecque et la religion chrétienne. This book is a fascinating example of how a text can be invested with multiple auctorial projections linked to the writer’s death.

Inhérente à la création dans le Groupe de Coppet, la collaboration caractérise également sa pratique de l’écriture polémique. Alors que l’Empire amorce son déclin, Germaine de Staël, Benjamin Constant et Auguste Schlegel s’attellent à des écrits de propagande défendant la cause de Bernadotte. Cet article explore, à la lumière de ces écrits et des Journaux intimes de Constant, 189les perspectives auctoriales et éditoriales que convoque cette pratique collaborative de l’écriture polémique.

Laetitia Saintes, “‘I must contribute to this important work’. The collaborative practice of controversial writing in the Coppet Group”

Inherent to the creation of the Coppet group, collaboration also characterizes its practice of polemical writing. As the First French Empire began to decline, Germaine de Staël, Benjamin Constant and Auguste Schlegel began to write propaganda in defense of Bernadotte ’ s cause. This article explores, in the light of these writings and Constant ’ s Journaux intimes, the auctorial and editorial perspectives that this collaborative practice of polemical writing calls for.

Malgré la proximité avec le calcul des intérêts, Staël, dans le manuscrit de 1798, refuse tout sacrifice des droits de l’individu. La liberté dépend d’un rapport de confiance envers les institutions et leurs représentants. Cet article analyse la manière dont Staël se réapproprie la défense par Rousseau des droits fondamentaux, puis l’articulation moderne entre liberté politique et civile, et enfin les moyens de restaurer la confiance préservatrice de la République.

Johanna Lenne-Cornuez, “‘On what basis can trust be restored?’ Staël and the principles that must form the foundation of the Republic”

In spite of the calculation of interests, Staël, in the manuscript of 1798, refuses the sacrifice of the rights of the individual. Freedom depends on the establishment of trust between individuals and institutions. This article first analyzes the way in which Staël reappropriates Rousseau ’ s defense of fundamental rights, then the modern articulation between political and civil liberty, and finally the means of restoring the trust that preserves the Republic.

Céline Spector, « Résister à l’empire. De l’équilibre européen à la république fédérative ».

Cette contribution analyse les modèles légués par la philosophie des Lumières, qui envisage pour la première fois l’Europe comme corps politique et comme entité culturelle. Dans cet héritage, la « voie kantienne » constitue la clé des débats philosophiques. Dans le sillage de Kant, l’Europe est souvent interprétée comme une expérimentation du cosmopolitisme. Or du fait de son ampleur et de sa légitimité théorique, cette source néglige d’autres théories susceptibles d’éclairer la forme politique qui convient à l’Union européenne, celles de Montesquieu et de Rousseau notamment.

Céline Spector, “Resisting the empire. From balance in Europe to the federal republic”

This contribution highlights the different models bequeathed by the Enlightenment, which for the first time considers Europe as a political body and as a cultural entity, Within this legacy the “Kantian way” is today the keystone of philosophical debates. In the wake of Kant, Europe is often interpreted as an experiment in cosmopolitanism. However, because of its scope and its theoretical legitimacy, this Kantian source neglects other theories likely to shed light on the political form which is appropriate for the European Union, those of Montesquieu and Rousseau in particular.

Souad Bouhouch, « Corinne ou l’Italie de Germaine de Staël. L’identité tragique d’une femme de génie ou la crise d’un dialogue des nations »

Staël pose, dans Corinne ou l’Italie, la question de l’identité d’une poétesse dépossédée de son génie et de sa liberté par un amour malheureux. Partagée entre l’Angleterre et l’Italie, deux pays auxquels elle demeure attachée, Corinne est confrontée à un dilemme : vivre pour sa célèbrité, en cachant son vrai nom, ou révéler son identité et perdre l’amour et le génie. La rupture avec son amant s’accompagne d’une crise d’appartenance nationale, culturelle et historique.

Souad Bouhouch, “Germaine de Staël’s Corinne ou l’Italie. The tragic identity of a woman of genius, or the crisis of dialogue between nations”

Staël, in Corinne ou l’Italie, considers identity of a poetess, dispossessed of her genius and her freedom by unhappy love. Split between two countries to which she remains attached, Corinne is confronted with a dilemma: to live for her fame by hiding her real name, or to reveal her identity and lose her happiness in love and her genius. The sentimental rupture with the English lover opens up the question of national, cultural, and historical belonging.
