Abstract: De Staël’s political works, under the regime of the Directoire, modernize the concept of the republic by borrowing several ideas from British models: her Réflexions sur la paix intérieure and Des Circonstances actuelles develop a new reflection on constitutional questions, favoring practice over theory and civil liberty over equality. The project to consolidate the Republic required a modernization of the concept of a republic, in which de Staël played a pioneering role.
