Abstract: The new critical edition of the Considérations casts a new light on the genesis of the parallel between France and England, as well as its functions. Although they appear to be a digression, the chapters devoted to England actually play a major structuring role: de Staël is not simply drawing a political model from the country, in support of her praise for her father. She also considers the differences, and the potential for applying English principles in France.
