Carmen: Construting absence”
“À présent, je n’aime plus rien”: we propose a reading of this sentence that Mérimée lends to Carmen, forming the hypothesis that there is a lacuna in the text, not in relation to a more complete, lost object, but to an object posterior to the text, in this case an excerpt from Virginie Despentes’ essay King Kong Théorie. We thereby arrive at imagining the possibility of a rape in Carmen and at questioning more generally the relationship between the rape narrative and the narrative motivation.
Keywords: Carmen, Virginie Despentes, reading construction, narrative motivation, rape narrative.
Carmen: Catching a glimpse of the archè through a lacuna in the narrative”
“À présent, je n’aime plus rien”… This sentence, uttered by Carmen on the brink of death, is the key to the enigma hidden at the center of Mérimée’s novella, an enigma reflected in a contradictory motivation: overwhelmed by Don José’s jealousy, Carmen threatens to have him killed, then, after another scene of jealousy, she lets herself be killed by him. We propose a solution with the help of a psychoanalytic reading based on the analysis of the logic of the narrative.
Keywords: Carmen, archè, psychoanalysis, reading construction, narrative motivation.
Daniel-Henri Pageaux, “L’Abbé Aubain, a charming couple”
The proposed reading of L’Abbé Aubain takes as its starting point an intertextual game that is identifiable from the very beginning and that continues throughout the text in the form of explicit, but also, and above all, implicit allusions. This intense intertextuality offers the possibility of clarifying what can be understood by anticlericalism in a “story” that stages, not without irony, a singular couple.
Keywords: L’Abbé Aubain, intertextuality, Molière, Balzac, George Sand, Byron.
Thierry Ozwald, “Regarding a rediscovered watercolor. Mérimée and Franche-Comté”
In December 1856, Mérimée found himself in the South of France, temporarily withdrawing from his life in Paris and devoting himself, among other things, to watercolor. This study is a literary stroll around one of his watercolors, which was recently found in boxes from the Bibliothèque d’études de Besançon and had remained unknown until now. In this respect, we will explore the relationship Mérimée may have had with the Franche-Comté region, as well as with the famous Francs-Comtois with whom he may have come into contact.
Keywords: Franche-Comté, painting, archaeology, Académie française, Claude-Jules and Édouard Grenier, Nodier.
178Thierry Santurenne, “Staging Carmen. On some fertile infidelities”
Since the aftermath of the Second World War, productions of Carmen have shed new light on Bizet’s work, albeit at the expense of distorting his opéra comique aesthetic. Three productions, by Calixto Bieito, Robert Carsen, and Dmitri Tcherniakov, respectively, allow us to appreciate the main orientations of current readings, where the character and the Hispanic setting are frequently considered according to contemporary ideology.
Keywords: Carmen, opera, staging, Bizet, Calixto Bieito, Robert Carsen, Dmitri Tcherniakov.
Nicolas Cvetko, “D’Ille and duelle. Mérimée according to Bava”
In collaboration with his son Lamberto, Mario Bava directed his Vénus d’Ille in 1978. This article proposes a study of the different ways in which the multiple variations of duality present in Mérimée’s text fit into the economy of television film. Through his mise-en-scène and the troubled interplay between the character Mathieu, Mademoiselle de Puygarrig, and the statue, Bava sketches a poetic double of adaptation and cinematic fantasy.
Keywords: La Vénus d’Ille, cinema, television, adaptation, Mario Bava.
