Abstract: This article discusses Mérimée’s influence on Mémoires d’un touriste. Resituating Stendhal’s initial work on this book in the context of the year 1837, the year Mérimée’s Essai sur l’architecture religieuse au Moyen Âge was published and the year of a trip the two men shared to Central France, the ways in which Mérimée is present in the work are analyzed through an evaluation of what is borrowed from his travel notes and a study of his writing process.
