Abstract: 1917. The Chemin des Dames was a bloodbath. Mutinies were spreading in the French and Russian ranks. It was in this troubled context that Mauricius, real name Maurice Vandamme (1886–1974), published a pamphlet titled “Les Profiteurs de la guerre.” Mauricius did not leave anyone out in this terrible indictment: companies, banks, shareholders, small-time speculators, certain officers, even a few unscrupulous shopkeepers.
