  • Abstract: An animal's ontogeny is influenced by the meanings it enacts throughout its history. In species with densely interconnected nervous systems, these meanings are likely to be accompanied by moments of lived experience. We describe the ontogeny of a roe buck and imagine what it might experience, based on what we think we have in common with him, and never attributing to its experience characteristics that are typically human because linked to language.
