Abstract: This article proposes an ethical approach to the environmental question, one which places this question in the context of critiques of political hierarchy and inequality in the early modern period. The particular focus is on early modern discussions of deforestation, in royal ordonnances and in a satirical novel about late 16th century court practices, L’Isle des hermaphrodites (1605).
