Abstract: This article offers a synthetic vision of the emergence of the spatial structure of the prison in the Second Middle Ages. The multiplication of incarceration facilities during the 12th-15th centuries was accompanied by the production of specific administrative and literary writings on prison spaces, but also by the promotion of a clear political function and social significance of imprisonment.
