Raffaele Ruggiero, « Introduction »

Raffaele Ruggiero, “Introduction”

The framework of the research here proposed is that of diplomatic relations at the beginning of modernity, especially the links between France and the seigniorial states of the Italian Peninsula. The aspect that seems most obvious is the difference in scale between the phenomena taken into consideration: it is precisely this aspect that prompted the authors of the contributions gathered here to question the plural way of constructing the political space and his representation.

Keywords: Renaissance, diplomacy, seigniorial states, Italy, France.

Jean-Louis Fournel, “The writing of catastrophe during the Italian Wars (1494-1559). A European history”

The continuous wars that take place in Italy during the period 1494-1559 shaped a radical modification of linguistic and rhetoric categories (and as a consequence of aesthetic and ethical categories). These new perspectives were together the foundation of a new literature and a new kind of knowledge, especially in the field of politics and history.

Keywords: catastrophe, war, rhetoric, Italy, Renaissance.

Raffaele Ruggiero, Territory and geography in Machiavelli and Guicciardini”

The idea of territory in Machiavelli and Guicciardinis works, especially the geographical representation, is an important subject for researches in the field of literature, in the field of the history of ideas, in the field of the socio-economic and military history during an age of anxiety as that of the “Italian wars”.

Keywords: Machiavel, Guichardin, territory, space, representation.

Alessia Loiacono, “Private letters and international politics on the eve of the Prince”

What is the atmosphere surrounding Machiavelli at the time of writing his Prince? What political events precede the famous letter that the secretary addresses to his friend Francesco Vettori on December the 10th, 1513? Our aim is to go back to these long-debated questions in order to consider the historical character of Machiavelli and that of pope Leo X – the leader of the Medici family, under a new light.

Keywords: Machiavel, Cicero, correspondence, diplomacy, Florence.

Béatrice Charlet-Mesdjian, The King of France, hospes or hostis? Points of view on France and the French in the Venatio of the humanist poet Ercole Strozzi (Ferrara, c. 1473-1508)”

E. Strozzi left two versions of his cynegetical poem: the Thera transmitted by a single manuscript and the Venatio printed by Aldus Manutius. Charles VIII, while he was about to undertake his “descent to Italy”, organized an hunting party in honour to his Italian hosts. This epyllion, which offers a perfect example of a “work in progress”, illustrates the ambiguous, versatile and complex position of the Ferrarese poet and statesman towards the king of France and his subjects.

Keywords: cynegetic poem, Ferrare, Charles VIII, humanism, elite training.

Jean Sénié, “Milestones for a history of relations between the Duchy of Ferrara and the Kingdom of France”

As the Italian wars begin, the dukedom of Ferrara and the French kingdom build diplomatic relationships. Their relationships are determined by the strategic interests of each state, although there may be some unexpected religious and cultural effects which paradoxically bring them closer.

Keywords: Ferrare, France, international relations, Este, cultural relations.

Bruno Capaci, « Cito cito volans”.

Jean-Marc Rivière, The culture of war in the figurative arts of central Italy courts (Mantua and Ferrara, 1494-1512)”

From the entry of Charles VIII in Italy, a disconnection occurs between the images produced in the Peninsula and politics, considered in its military developments. The analysis of the works of art produced in the courts of Mantua and Ferrara between 1494 and 1512 shows that the figurative field, like the historiographical reflection, seeks new solutions to understand and then to represent a historical reality that has become illegible.

Keywords: arts, Renaissance, war, history, representations.

Vanessa Obry, The French versions of Floire et Blancheflor in manuscript context. Medieval reception and generic consciousness”

The story of the lovers Floire and Blancheflor is told in two twelfth century French texts, which seem to belong to different literary genres. While the most ancient version (Le Conte de Floire et de Blancheflor) is the first known example of the idyllic genre in French, the second (Le Roman de Floire et de Blancheflor) can be considered a chivalric romance. This article explores the medieval perception of this generic distinction by considering the two early French versions in their manuscript context.

Keywords: Floire et Blancheflor, reception, manuscripts, literary genres, tale, novel.

Romina Luzi, Florios in the Byzantine romance tradition of the 14th and 15th centuries”

The Byzantine romance Phlorios et Platziaflore was an adaptation of a Western model, which specialists have identified as the Toscan Cantare, Fiorio e Biancifiore. The plot and the succession of episodes was to a great extent respected by the Byzantine author. However, the process of acculturation reveals itself through the presentation the stylistic features, such as the rhetorical amplifications of dialogue, the complaints, the so-called ἐκφράσεις and other rhetorical figures. Together, these elements link Phlorios to the beginnings of a romance tradition in the vernacular.

Gilles Polizzi, « LArbre vermeil.

Gilles Polizzi, “The vermeil Tree. Baghdad and the genesis of the courtly garden in Floire et Blanchefleur and its rewrites”

By reconstructing the tale of Floire and Blancheflor with the help of historical data, this article assesses the function of the garden across its different depictions in texts written by authors from Boccaccio to Shakespeare. The pattern of the “Tree-fountain” described in Bagdad by Al Khatib before 1071 suggests a new way to understand the courtly fountain of Love used by Guillaume de Lorris. Moreover, the tales reception history sheds light on the generic distinctions (allegory vs tragedy) that are present in later versions of the narrative.

Keywords: Conte de Floire et de Blancheflor, Adrien Sevin, rewriting, garden, Baghdad, Italy.

Patricia E. Grieve, “Reading Flores y Blancaflor in Early Modern Iberia and the Spanish New World”

Historia de los dos enamorados Flores y Blancaflor, printed multiple times in sixteenth century Spain, was also popular in the New World. The text reflects sixteenth century historical context of Christian-Muslim/morisco co-existence. We may see it as a precursor of the tradition of “maurophilia”. Many read the story as Spains early history, but I also place it within the context of the Spanish colonial publics tendency to compare the assimilation of the moriscos in Spain to the efforts to convert indigenous peoples.

Keywords: Historia de los dos enamorados Flores y Blancaflor, reception, Spain, New World, Moorish, Indigenous.

Leah Tether, “The Un-publication of Floris and Blancheflour in Early-Modern England”

The Middle English Floris and Blancheflour has survived in four medieval manuscripts, including the famous Auchinleck manuscript. The texts appearance in volumes like Auchinleck, and its wide publication across Europe well into the 1600s, confirms the narratives enduring commercial capital. However, no English printer published the text. This study explores why the fledgling English publishing trade set aside this previously “good bet”, despite readily printing other metrical romances.

Keywords: Floris and Blancheflour, manuscripts, edition, unpublication, Auchinleck.

Bernd Renner, “Introduction. The Ships of Fools: translation, imitation, and contention”

The introduction of this dossier of three article attempts to recap briefly the major topics that have been at the center of the recently renewed interest for the corpus of the Ships of Fools, the first Pan-European bestseller of the age of printing, in the context of the cultural and linguistic transfer known as translatio, which it exemplifies. The articles focus specifically on several key notions: translation-imitation, preaching and the larger religious context as well as the satirical mode that dominates the corpus.

Keywords: Ships of Fools, Sebastian Brant, translation, imitation, translatio, preaching, satire, humanism, movere.

Olga Anna Duhl, From the Narrenschiff to the French ships. Translation and sermon”

Sebastian Brants satire, the Ship of Fools, became known in several European countries soon after its publication in 1494. While such a commercial success was clearly generated by the printing press, its growing interest can also be attributed to the renewal of popular preaching. Evidence to this point is provided by Jodocus Badiuss Stultiferae naves, and a French adaptation by Jean Drouyn and the Anonyme de Marnef, La Nef des folles.

Keywords: five senses, women, insanity, humanism, printing, preaching, translation, Ship of Fools, Sebastian Brant.

Anne-Laure Metzger-Rambach, The term satire in Jean Drouyns Nef des folz, 1498”

This paper examines the use of the word satire in La Nef des folz by Jean Drouyn and its consequence for the definition of the genre. The spelling confusion satire/satyre leads to a fictitious literary history based on the addition of the Greek comedy to the attested Latin origin of the genre. Overshadowing the verse form in the 482generic definition, the adapter insists on the ethical dimension and develops a stronger relationship between the content of the criticism and the targeted sinner.

Keywords: satire, satyr, potpourri, insanity, Narrenschiff, Ship of Fools, Sebastian Brant.

Bernd Renner, « “Quam satyram vocitare queo”.

Bernd Renner, Quam satyram vocitare queo. Satire between the serious and the comic in the Ships of Fools

This article proposes a study of the satirical mode by comparing the German original, the influential Latin version by Brants disciple, Jakob Locher, and the first French prose adaptations. Whereas popular comedy and a certain destructive pessimism seem to dominate Brants satire, the subsequent transpositions privilege an approach balancing Horatian gentleness and Juvenalian indignation, with a pronounced focus on the curative forces of the satirical verb and, consequently, their own authorial powers.

Keywords: satire, Juvénal, Horace, Jakob Locher, utile dulci mixtum, Ship of Fools, Sebastian Brant.

Catherine Croizy-Naquet, Love writing in the first French translation of Guido delle Colonnes Historia destructionis Troiae

Around 1380 at the court of France, the first anonymous French prose translator of the Historia destructionis Troiae of Guido delle Colonne tries to literally translate its source into a sometimes outrageous writing that arouses suspicions of a biased discourse. The study of love rhetoric makes it possible to grasp the degree of complicity between the author and his readers and then to determine the distance between yesterdays and todays reception and its stakes.
