Abstract: The narrative of Hernaut de Beaulande makes room for romance-like encounters and moralizing considerations. The poet’s benevolent attitude toward the material is accompanied by new tonalities: violence associated with humor; magic and fantasy; and mordant interventions. The values of the past are dispersed, occasionally associated with humble characters who occupy a considerable space beside the protagonists. The rewriting rather closely approaches the popular versions of the Bibliothèque Bleue.
