Abstract: In 1393, social conflict took place in Auxerre between poor wine makers and their landowners. In a defense statement addressed to parliament, the urban elite depicted the wine makers’ movement as an outburst of passions that may cause a revolt. So they delegitimize their opponents and justify their policy of repression. As this narrative lacked judicial efficiency, other discursive strategies were chosen during the proceedings.
