Abstract:By signing the Treaty of Madrid (1526), king Francis I was released from his captivity after he was defeated in Pavie (1525). Immediately, he publicly condemned the terms of the treaty and his attitude sparked either approval or outrage. The present study analyzes the opposed views of his supporters and his despisers.
