  • Abstract: The article deals with the capital passage in Sophie Cottin’s fiction through the analysis of her works. While her early production is characterized by passion, that often leads to scandalous solutions, with the novels Mathilde (1805) and Élisabeth (1806), religious faith prevails over love. If this change corresponds to new political and cultural circumstances, it is mostly dictated by aesthetic reasons: the reading of Atala.
