Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the status of dictionaries in language teaching methods and approaches from a diachronic perspective, as well as their presence in the CEFR. A discussion of text reception and production activities deployed with level C1 university students follows, aiming to raise awareness of the potential of current language dictionaries for proficient learners through the analysis of the structure of a few words’ entries in the most used digital dictionaries of European Portuguese.
