  • Abstract: There is a French tradition going back to the 19th century which still influences the way of apprehending lexico-semantic change in a strictly linear fashion. The study of the French word libertin shows that, on the contrary, setting aside this conception, which always favours the hypothesis of polysemy rather than homonymy, allows for a more accurate account of lexical events.
