Abstract: This article puts forward a novel explanation of the way exclamatives like Quel (adj.) N ! are used. This involves a reappraisal of the notions of intensity, gradation and exclamations, bringing out the limitations of traditions analyses and stressing the semiotic originality of the exclamative mode and the complexity of the semantic functioning with relation when combined with quel.
