Abstract: The paper deals with idioms undergoing a process of semantic compositionalization which transforms them into collocations (semi-phraseological phrases). This process of lexical mutation, which we term phraseological separation, is very active at any synchronic state of natural languages. We concentrate here on the phraseological separation of French idioms which possess a V + Complement structure in order to propose an explanatory analysis of this phenomenon.
