Abstract: Founded in 1964, the Institut für Deutsche Sprache (IDS) is today the largest non-university institution for the investigation and documentation of the contemporary German language. The article sketches the development of lexicological research and lexicographic practice at the IDS in line with its institutional brief, its organisational structures, changes in research paradigms and societal developments.
